I just started hearing a "clunking" type of noise in my front end when I turn the wheel to make sharp turns. I took the truck, 2003 F250 4x4 Supercab, to my local mechanic and he drove the truck and inspected the front end and said mothing is wrong. I never heard the noise before and it did the same thing this morning when pulling into my parking lot at work. I do a slow left turn to back into a space, the same turn everyday.
Have you used 4x4 at all lately? Not sure if you have manual lock hubs or not, but if your hubs are in "lock" position or if the hubs didn't disengage this can cause a clunking like that. My truck was doing that when I made sharp turns.. clunking like something was binding up. The guy I bought the truck from told me the hubs turned clockwise was the unlocked position and thats where he left it. Got under the truck and the front axle was locked. Unlocked the hubs, took it for a drive, and the clunking was gone.
If it's your sway bar bushings, you will probably also hear the clunking sound when you go over minor bumps in the road. Relatively easy and inexpensive repair (if any repair these days can be inexpensive!).
Thanks for all the replies and part numbers for those Moog replacements.
I talked to a different mechanic today and he also mentioned the swaybar end link bushings like you guys did. He also mentioned that the hubs may need to be greased as well. I'm going to have him look at it next Saturday.
