I have a buddy that is wanting to build a 74 F100 short wheel base for our local dirt drags. It has a stock 302 in it. Track is fairly short. So he wants low end to get her movin fast. I guess it has fairly good heads since they are not 78-79 heads. What cam would you guys consider for something like this? I guess he is gonna go with .30 over high compression pistons of some sorts. 31x10.50 mud terrain tires on the back. Maybe change gears in rearend. Probably a shift kit for the tranny. Thanks for any help.
Do yall recommend aftermarket crankshaft or rods? Maybe just upgrade the fasteners? High flow oil pump? He is going to use this truck just for this one thing, so I am sure the engine will be hammered everytime he drags.
Most of the trucks in his field are 2000 or newer. It seems that nobody around here is really getting into buildin the old trucks for this, I don't know why.

Depends on the budget. For the most part the bottem end of these motor is pretty stout and really doesn't need anything if it's in good running order. Of course if he wants to rev it to the moon then a full rebuild with balanced and forged internals is a good idea.

It's because these old motors need a complete aftermarket topend to be competetive since none of the stock SBF heads will produce much beyond 300hp.
the e303 and b303 cams will move the powerband higher in the rpm range which is what you've said isn't wanted. i had a trick flow trackmax stage one cam in my otherwise bone stock 302 in my mustang and it made almost 300lb/ft to the wheels before 3k rpm. your best bet for low end power in my opinion, would be either a stock HO cam from '88 to '93 mustangs or a trick flow stage one with 4.10 gears.
