So I too can get rid of this mess too?
The wiring in the truck is a complete mess with lots of things un hooked.

What a mess I have here. But the damn thing runs!
As you can see I have some future questions coming!
Rick

You will get ride of the 3 solenoids you have wired to the firewall, they used to be mounted to the back of the valve cover on the 86.

Also I noticed in one of your photos that you have a voltage regulator mounted next to the starter solenoid. The 86 would have had an ALT with an internal voltage regulator, or to say a 2G ALT. A 2G ALT has plugs for the wires and a 1G has a post/stud for the power output wire.

Yea when I got the truck it had an old voltage reg there and the alt was bad and not hooked up. I went to american auto parts and got a new alt and they gave me to one with the posts to slide over. And that is the reg they gave me to replace the old one.
Here is my wire mess: A pure nightmare--

Wow, it is a mess, surprised you got the ALT to work.
I would have recommend a 2G ALT as you truck has the matching plugs for it (1986) and it would have been easier to hook up. Do you have a amp meter in the instrument cluster? Does it work?

<O</O
The Dist in the photo looks like the one I was going to recommend from AutoZone.

Yes I have one in the cluster and it does not work. I can't find the wires to hook it up. I find the ones off the alt and from the volt reg, it's a male/ female plug and the book says that is it. I can't find the wire and oposite plug to go into the dash. Go figure!

“But what is the module they say it doesn’t come with. Do I need one to make this work?”

The Distributor you currently have running in the truck is for an EEC IV ignition system, it has an IGN module bolted on the side of it that is controlled by the computer. So what they are saying is you can buy the EEC IV Dist with or without an IGN module bolted to it. This is not used in a Duraspark IGN system. The duraspark IGN module is shown in the photo I posted with the ignition harness.

WOW! Thanks again Jim you are such a great help! Even I can do this, I think!
Now I have something to do before the tranny mission when it gets a little warmer. Get the parts bought now, and wait for the warmer days.

RLH, where you from in MO?
Jim, I am putting a 81 6cyl into an 86 with all the components (water pump, alt, etc). Naturally, I want to go duraspark. Will it pretty much, just plug in?

The photo I posted in post #4 was of an DS2 harness off an 4.9 1981 F150, this will plug into an 1986. I would check the voltage at the coil positive at idle to verify the resistor wire is dropping the voltage to the coil a little after you get it running.
<O</O
I would use the alternator off the 1986 as I believe it will be a G2. The 1986 truck will have the wiring harness (ALT plugs) to match a G2 alternator, or at least that what my 86 has. I think you want to stick with the 1986 ALT wiring so the AMP meter will work.

those look awesome, and give me ideas.lol.but one word of advice get rid of those crip connectors, they are good for the interior of the cab ,but the engine compartment gets moisture and the wires will corode.you can get crip connectors that have heat shrink on them and use some dielectric grease.or you can get weather pac connectors.these will save you headaches in the future. otherwise excellent job.
