My 79 F150 needs a better looking dashpad. I was looking at a Dennis Carpenter catalog from a few year ago that I have, and it lists 78-79 as being different than 73-77. Anybody know how so? I got a salvage yard dash for my 76 a few years ago. When I was removeing the old dash, I counted all the studs on the dash I was going to put in, so that I would know I had all the nuts off while removing the bad one in the truck. Well the one in my 76 apperently had one more that my replacement didn't have. I'm wondering if this is the difference? My 79 is Black and Dennis Carpenter has only Blue in 78-79. Any other vendor ideas would be appreciated as well
I run in to the same thing with my 79 f150 4wd. I refused to pay $299.00 to a after market dealer. I found a solid, no cracks, but badly faded, dash pad off a salvage yard truck, 79 model for $25.00. I went to a auto uphostery and bought a aeresol can of vinyl paint made solely for dashes and vinyl tops that matched my original pad color.. I rubbed the pad down with laquer thinner to degrease it and to give a bit of texture for the spray to adhere too. Five light coats of paint and a topcoat of Meguires vinyl protector later, I now have a like new looking dash, that is the original color of the old one. Total investment $35.00 and a 1/2 hr. labor. I went and found me another one in a salvage yard and made me a "spare" because they are disappearing fast, and the sun is the worst enemy of the old dash pads. I cannot testify to what it will look like in five years, but am going to chance it, rather than putting on a pad that does not color match, and cost over 300 bucks with shipping. These old trucks eat money like a hog eating slop anyway, ha good luck on your truck
