Ugh! Why is it that I do the whole egr delete, fix any problems that go wrong with my truck on my own, can do just about anything and everything with some good instructions on this truck and I can't seem to keep the oil filter cap from leaking? I've torqued it to specs, still leaks, put a quarter turn after torque spec and fixes it for a little while then leaks again, tighten it a little more and man it gushes like a gyster. Ugh just irrates me.
Is it the cap leaking or the oil leaking from a crack in the aluminum housing close to the top? You might want to take a flashlight to the housing with the filter removed and total cleaned outside and in and see if there are any cracks.
Haha, I hear ya Shawn! I got an oil leak in mine I haven't tracked down yet from switching from 15/40 to 5/40. My buddy thinks it is the main seal, but we didn't really spend any time looking.
Don't they make an aftermarket metal oil filter cover? I think I have seen some, but who knows with this truck, that may cause any number of problems. LOL

I think they make a billet alum. cover for our trucks, but I can't remember. Although I'm pretty sure, because I was thinking about getting one since I have that oil pressure unit screwed into the stock one. Just haven't gotten around to it yet.
are you using an oem filter with a new o-ring? normally its from the o-ring not sealing or being cut. Ive done it a few times
Yeah I use all oem filters and new oring everytime. They do make a billet cap 100 bucks at elite but I don't wanna tighten it to tight with one of those. Knowing my luck the casting would break. Sometimes I can get it to stop but it leaks more than not. It's like I have to find the sweet spot and takes forever to find it. Am I the only one with this problem?
Mine clicks at the torque spec before the cap is seated all the way from o-ring resistance, and yes I'm putting oil on the o-ring. I've given up on torquing it, just tighten it down until its fully seated and give it a little tug. Never had a leak.
I like Mike's ideal...with a twist. Take a small LED flashlight...you know those ones that are like a couple of bucks about 3" long. When its completely dark out...no light polution....Remove the oil filter, turn the flash light on (facing up of course)...put the oil filter cap back on the specs...or whatever you were putting it at before. Now in total darkness...see if any light comes thru the cap? Worth a shot. There could be a burr or crack in the filter silo?
Moyock...Not a bad idea at all and I like it! Ya just forgot to tell them to place the LED flashlight into the filter silo. Remember, guys like me that were born polish and blonde need that type of prompting...Pictures too at times! LOL
never used a torque wrench fr an oil filter, but hey i've only been doing oil changes for......28 years never know i might all of a sudden start to. don't even always change the o ring, all depends how i feel. never had 1 fall off or leak, including the 6.0. i realy doubt any crack would be large enough to show light cuz if it was it would pump dry before you got out of town. remove cover, clean cover and silo with brakeclean thoroughly,(check for cracks in strong light inside and out) inspect oring replace as needed, lube with oil or a little grease. have someone start it while you watch and see where it comes out. the 6.0 cover has a nice shoulder on it, spin it down til it bottoms and give it a tiny little tug
Alright so I bought a new filter and o ring and thought I'd change the o ring and see if that would fix it. Thought I would just change the filter while I was at it and popped in the new filter and it wouldn't spin just locked in place. Took the old filter and put it back in and it spun just fine. Couldn't tell what the old filter was cause elite diesel changed the oil when they did the studs (this is not elites wrong doing as the filter and cap are two separate pieces I just don't know what brand it was)but the new one was a motorcraft. When I bought this truck it had will fit filters on it so I bought a new cap and never looked back. Come to find out and I have no earthly idea as to how this cap came into my hands probably cause it's just my luck but it wasn't the right cap. 80 bucks later and no leaks so far. I think I read somewhere that they replaced oil filter caps with an updated one due to leaks if so low and behold I got one.
