Well since i got snowed out today i figured it was a good day to tear into my new(to me) ranger. The PO said it had no rear brakes and the e-brake did not work. Well i got the biggest surprise in the world when i pulled the drivers side drum! There was nothing there. And when i say nothing there i mean NOTHING. No shoes, hardware, wheel cyl. NOTHING!!!
Advanced had the shoes, wheel cyl and hardware but.... I need the E-brake balancing bar ,the e-brake Acuating lever and the wheel cyl pistons?. I had to order those from ford. those parts will be in fri, i hope. I put new shoes and hardware kit in the pass side and replaced the drivers e-brake cable. Also had to replace the rubber hose to the rear axle(PO removed driver brake line and cross threaded a bolt in as a plug) so w that replaced i bent up a new drivers brake line to the backing plate. I have to go back to work tomorrow, i just hope the parts will be here fri/sat so i can get this out of my garage
It is unimaginable that someone would literally remove all the brake parts and drive knowing there were no brakes. Do you have vehicle safety inspections in your state?
lol, well he did tell you there were no rear brakes. I guess he was being 100% truthfull on that issue. I had a friend lose his brake pads on one of his rear brakes in his isuzu pickup during an offroad trip. The caliper and rotor were trashed, so we did a quick trail fix and just removed the caliper and crimped the line off with some vise grips. That was about 2 years ago, and he is still driving around with it like that.

how can you have nothing in the rear? the line to the rear must have been pinched off or plugged. in either case it would have taken you 6 miles to stop. anyway new lines, wheel cylinders, shoes, and spring kits are not that expensive. make sure you bleed all brakes from front to back. start with the passenger side rear, driver side rear, passenger side front. then the driver side front to make sure all air is out.

that is what i figured.....till i got those parts. The wheel cyl didnt have the pistons to push on the shoes, the balancing bar was not there(or the spring for it), and the e-brake actuation lever was not there either. I had to go to for cuz i work from 6-6 and no junk yard are open. the FORD wheel cyl w the pistons was 80.73 the balancing bar(without spring) was 27.27 and the e-brake actuation lever was 47.75. Now i have to send the GF out tomorrow to another Ford dealer for a Ford hardware kit(17) for just the balencing bar spring since i have the rest of the hardware springs
D-B,
So how did you get it into your garage? I suspect you drove it there.
Remember that approximately 70% of the braking is done by the front brakes. Lots of mud boggers only use front brakes. They just pinch over / pound flat or plug the brake line leading to the rears.
Depending on how far you have to drive and what type of roads, i.e., heavy, urban traffic or rural, quiet roads you likely could have slipped the rear drums and wheels back on it and driven the truck carefully for a couple of days. Or maybe your GF would have given you a ride for a day or two while you rounded up the parts from the local NAPA or junkyard instead of going the expensive route via the FoMoCo stealership....... Maybe for some reason or another, none of those options were available to you. At least now it will pass the next inspection.
I just bought the truck last saturday. Trailered home then drove it in the garage. The truck actaully stopped fine(i didnt do any panic stops). It is my new commuter, i am selling my 96 Probe,so i'm not in any rush
