460 ?'s

currently have a 77 F-250 4x4 with 400. Found a 78 2WD with a running 460. Will I need all the acc. brackets and oil pan to make this swap?

Yep. I did a 400 cid to 460 swap in my '78 Bronco and none of the 400 brackets fit the 460. The factory brackets are difficult to find unless you know somebody. You will need to find the 460 brackets and engine mounts from a truck or van. If you can't find them, check out landlproducts.com. They have complete convertion kits for many applications.

They look similar but mine didn't. The A/C bracket and pulley assembly bolt to the waterpump and head and the 460 bolt holes are completely different.

Sorry for the confusion. It happens alot, just ask my wife. Yeh the brackets on the 460 will work in the other truck. Were they both with a C6 trans?

You'll want a rear sump oil pan with the 4x4 so the front axle doesn't hit the it. I dont know what type of pan is on a 2wd engine. One tip that I found out by doing this is, the 460 block is longer and you will need to loosen the bolts under the transfer case so it can slide back. You may also have to adjust the trans. linkage and kickdown lever.

I used to take 429s and 460s out of cars and put them into half ton 4x4s all the time when I was a kid. I would just let the front diff bash a dent in the sump of the pan. It would clear over time and never once put a hole in the pan. Shortly there after all of my half tons got six inch lifts and the front sump pan wasn't an issue anymore.

Don't mean to but what does everybody do with the c6? Every 2wd mid 70's ford Ive seen has a slip joint on the tail shaft. I have a c6 with divorced np205 in my 72 f250 so I have the intermediate shaft. how do I make the 385 series c6's work with my application. I heard from somebody you can take the 4x4 fe series c6 and swap tail shafts but it involves disassembling the tranny to get to some snap ring that holds it on.
Anybody wana set me strait on this one.
thanks
John

The 429/460 oil pans in trucks and vans are the same, your 2wd pan will work fine in your 4wd. If it was a car engine you would need to swap pans and sump. You can usually tell if it was a car engine because it will most likely have two dipsticks. The car dipsticks are in the front behind the alternator the truck and van's have them on the left side mid/rear of the oil pan.

My cousin and I did this on his 72 but we just used the slip joint and attached it to the universal of the intermediate shaft and it has worked fine for over 5 years now. If there's any give or flex in that area (which there shouldn't be) the slip joint absorbs it. We used a transmission from an old 74 LTD I think it was because it was a short tail shaft and some of the others we found was a long tail shaft and would have required moving or cutting something.
