Hey guys, a guy at work wants to trade tires with me because his are too big for his truck. He has the Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ's 315s and I have the BFG AT KO's
285s.
What do you think? Are they good tires? Do they wear well?
How are they going to affect my fuel mileage and power? Can I still tow heavy with these? Do I need to re-gear for these?
I know nothing about the make, just that they have about the same wear and it would be pretty much a straight swap. Is there any thing else I need to consider?
My son has the Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ's on his truck and they look good ride good but he spins his tire's a lot and they don't seem like there going to last long. It seems to be pretty soft rubber but they hook good on take off.
you will notice about the same affect as you would going from 265s to 285s. But now with 315s you might be wanting a gear change to get that low end response back not to mention clearance issues with that big of a tire with stock suspension. your milage is not going to get better, bigger tires, higher up more air resistance. More wear and tear on brakes and suspension; heavier tire. But they will look cool. Roy
riverrat, did you notice any difference in fuel mileage? and how do they wear?
how many miles do you have on them?
Looks like I gained about 1-2 gals after switching from the 305's to the 285's...I have run two sets of the Cooper STT's and they are very similiar to the MT's MTZ'S....Anything with the agressivness as either one are going to wear faster much less ther is several aspects that come into play with wear.Inflation, road, gravel road,off-raod,temp,ect,ect
I like both treads, both made by Cooper
That is is up to you.I think they are good tires.I did have trouble turning trying to get in parking places with the wider(305) tires. When they got worn down(not worn out)they did make more noise and stated cupping but mine is 4x4 and they do that.
My Buddy has 315 75 16's on his 01 with 55k miles on them they are worn out. I have the pro-comp x-terrains with 49k miles on them and I will probably get about 55k on mine as well. We rotate them every 4k miles and check the air regularly, once any of the aggressive tires get any kind of chop to them they will wear fast. I like the Mickey Thompsons better than the BFG's they ride smoother than my tires but mine are load range e and his are load range d. Dont know if that helps but both of our trucks are 7.3's. If it were me I would swap them out. I have a 6.5 inch lift on mine and 35's and I avg 15mpg which is the same I got with stock height and 33's. I drove to New Orleans and back with cruise set at 65 mph and got 18 mpg. I dont have gears either.

If you rotate them every 4k miles and you dont have bad hub assemblies or other suspension problems they shouldnt cup at all.
I hear that 305s rub on the springs at lock. Depending on the backspacing of your wheel, you may need a wheel spacer to keep from rubbing on the front springs when you turn.
