Yes the 02 has AD split shot injectors. If the 97 is a Cali model, it will have AB split shots in it, if not it will have AA single shots. The turbo setup on the 97 is all different and will need to be swapped out. You'll also need to plug the hole in the valley for the mechanical fuel pump on the 97 motor.

yes 02 have split shots...i believe the 97 98 7.3 still have the fuel pump in the valley of the motor..the 99-03 trucks have an elerctric pump on the frame rails..the blocks and heads also changed during that swap...

the heads are different you say. aww damn didn't want to get into all that. Will the mechanical work in place of the electric.

Another question. to swap a manual in place of an auto must be near impossible due to the electronics ??

No the heads are not different.

Take the 97 engine, plug hole in the valley where the 97 fuel pump was and take intake plennems and ALL turbo componets off. Install the plennems off the 02 and ALL turbo componets and you will need the wireing harness off of the 02. I think there are 2 sensors you will have to cut ends off and make new ones or hard wire it, the connectors changed, on only two of the sensors i beleive.

Other then that, its a direct swap, with WAYYYY better rods!

Good rods = High HP!

That 2002 PCM is going to be wanting to fire split-shot AD's to run right. So, it might be time to be swapping injectors between motors, too.

Good to see you posting anyways!
I don't know how much work would be involved in retaining the manual fuel pump... it would be far easier to plug the hole and just stick with the stock SD fuel setup.

thanks dudes

I won the bid for a 02 4x4 250 ext cab auto with around 300kmiles.it runs but guy said the 1 and 8 cylinder injectors are leaking down or into cylinder or something. I have a good running 97 engine here If the deal goes through.

guess i was wrong i thought the SD 7.3 had the oiler built into the block for the turbo.....then again..some 97's and 98 trucks did come with a turbo....

Ron, unless you are talking IH trucks, there are no 98 model trucks. The PSD from 94.5-95 is slightly different in the HPOP reservoir, and the 94.5 has a different cooling system. 96-97 have SD style HPOP reservoirs, and all the OBS trucks have a different cam with a lobe to run the mechanical fuel pump that mounts under the turbo. With the SD the mechanical pump went away, and so did the lobe on the cam that drives it.

Troubleshoot the 2002 Engine First!

mrblonde108: Before you go to all the work of an engine swap, check out the injectors on the two bad cylinders first. It may be as simple as two bad injectors or bad copper cups that seal the injector to the head.

Replacing the copper cups isn't too bad a job, and instructions have been posted on this site a couple of times. I believe that they include instructions on how to make a cup puller from a Cat bolt, and there are cup tools available for loan or rent.

Don't give up on the old engine until you determine that it has serious problems. Your '97 engine is a good backup plan, but you may not have to use it!

ok

went out there today to settle up. wow i think i finally scored . $1500 for 02 ext cab 4x4. the closest i'll ever come to winning the lottery! it's pretty sweet. she started right up i gave it fuel and it was smooth. I didnt feel a miss. Didn't see any smoke. I asked what was it doing. guy said he noticed it started smoking after driving it for a while. I didn't even drive it i just gave the dude the money. Now hopefully he get's the title with no hitch. Just has a little rust around the wheel wells.

aren't all powerstrokes superduties?? What does OBS stand for?? i'm new . don't know the abbreviations.

Do u think it's safe to drive it home about 70 miles or should i have it towed. don't want it hydrlocking . Is that possible?

mrblonde, where are you located? Maybe there's someone close by with an AE that can do a scan and run some tests to help determine the issue. Like jock said, it may be just a couple bad injectors, save you a lot of trouble from swapping motors.
If the rest of the truck is in good shape, sounds like you are sitting well with having a "spare" motor, I'd go for the deal. Post the issues that it has and there's enough knowledgable people here, we'll help you get it fixed.
