That's the exact heater I had on my 55 F-100. It originally came with two outlets on top. Someone has modified yours with a different top outlet. They come off - or at least the original part would.

now to bring up an old post , other cars and other things on the panel have gotten in the way of progress. after more research and more tearing down i found the po has also installed '56 defrost ducts (which are wider, so they drilled new holes) on both sides and that julie is right about it the heater face. i have some 53-55 ducts that are going in and a stock glove box to replace the home made one. julie do you have any pics of the outlet from your '55, i took off mine and there's nothing under it. if i'm going to make one i would like it to look some what like the factory unit. i need to stop digging around the truck or i'll never finish it .
I have a recirculating heater in my '55. The core & faceplate look just like yours. The plenum has two duct outlets like was previously shown. I bought it separate from the truck, so I can't speak to it's originality. It looks right though, and works well enough.

I can post pictures if you're really curious.
please post the pics, i have an idea of what i'm going to do. by the way does your heater have a cable operated shutoff valve under the hood?.

I don't have any- sorry. I restored that truck back in the "Instamatic" camera days and I have very few pictures of it. That's why I take so many digitals now.
I'll try and get some pictures up tonight. And no, I do not have a cable operated shut-off valve; it has to be operated from underneath the hood. It's similar to part #08299 shown here: Sacramento Vintage Ford
