This is going to be a stuck starter solenoid (aka starter relay), it' got an electromagnet inside that connects the battery to the starter motor when power is applied to the red/blue-stripe wire on the S terminal (#5):
From Franklin2's diagrams:
The things are wear items, they burn up as time goes on. The contacts inside get welded together.
You might be able to tap on it some wtih a hammer and get it to free up, it might work for a little while afterwards but you should still replace it.
I'm currently having that problem. I've changed the starter, the solenoid 3 times and the Ignition switch. Thought I fixed it the last time by fixing the ignition switch and solenoid at the same time but it will work for a while and eventually do it again. This last time some box thing that was connected to the negative wire started to smoke. Does anyone know what could be happening?

What year is your truck? Where are you buying your solenoids? What brand are they?
I have a 1987 5.8L. Its a brand new battery. the starter went out and I had this shop just fix it cause I didn't want to deal with it so they have just been trading me the whole time. They are the motorcraft brand. One thing I did notice is that the way they hooked it up at the shop is the positive and extra wires are on the far prong and the wire to the starter is on the closest one to the battery. I don't know if that changes things.
So that last time when it was smoking, later when I went out when it was cooled down. I found that the negative wire just had a plastic casing to cover another metal object, but the wire burnt in half at that point. I also read that maybe the cable on my positive side isn't thick enough?
I love this truck but all these things make me want to just smash it up haha.
