howdy,
how good are the autos in diesel's, ive heard they arent as reliable as manual transmission's for when doing mods....and what transmission is a good candidate for moding and reliabilty for diesel truck in the years between 85-91 thanks any ideas are appreciated
I like the manual trans. especially the ZF5, I have 3 with 200000 on them with nothing more than fluid changes done to them. I have no experance with the autos, but I have heard that the autos can be built to be bullet prove, but it is spendy from what I'v read.
I have got the t-19 (4-speed no od) and love it...I have always had slush boxes in my trucks and after this combo I dont think I would buy anything else.
From my little but of research here is what I came up with when shopping for mine
manuals :
ZF-5's are great but have the aluminium housing and has OD to keep it reasonable on the highway (there still pretty tough...you would have to really abuse it to damage it)
t19 is all iron - no overdrive but to break it you need to set a goal for it. If you have the 4.10 rear end you will seriously want a GV (or other OD unit) to keep your highway crusing speeds reasonable.
Autos:
C6- traditional ford 3 speed - no OD, but tough as nails for an autobox
e4od- computer controlled - plan to spend a few bucks to make it relaibale and tough
keep in mind this is just the nutshell I found when searching....my main goal was to build a truck I could abuse the hell out of and would prove cheap and reliable - so far I have had her 4 months and 36000 (working) miles (yes, thats 9000 a month) and have had no issues that made me regret buying her
awesome, thanks guys yea because ive noticed a few trucks on craigslist that have the autos and i know on my dodge that they are expensive and cant take the torque as much as the manuals.. and just another question timothyr how do u like ur dually with the 6.9 and whats ur fuel mileage like? thanks for the help guys have a good day
I have both, one with an Automatic and Standard and I see the differents, the Standard does so much better! And plus I love the feeling of being more in control of the vehicle. And depending on witch auto you get, if you get a C6, there awesome transmissions, but only 3 gears, so highway MPG won't be that great, and the other option is the E4OD 4 speed over drive, but it's a bunch of sensors and electronics.... and well you know what happens to them after a while. So yeah Standard is defenentlly the way to go on these gutless diesels haha!
absolutly love it...freaking work horse, and not bad at allwhen I am doing my 700-900 mile runs.as far as milage, keep in mind I do not have an overdrive or turbo on it yet (collecting parts)...typically I see around 16 in town (lots of 0-45mph), 13 on the road (consistant 65 mph...with 4.10's the motor begs for mercy)...those numbers seem to be very consistant, and are with about 1800lbs in the bed, 65 psi in all 6.
The AT is now the standard for most vehicles. But I still catch myself calling manuals, standards. That was back when a.m. radios and crank up windows were standard equipment also. The good old days.
