FRx and HPx

Hi all,
I plan on doing the FRx and HPx over my Christmas break. Is there anything in particular I should do first? For instance, is it dumb to do FRx before in-tank mods? Also, what is the difference between Clay's FRx and the DI Regulated Return?
Thanks

The FRx kit just balences out the flow of fuel to the heads. A DI RR uses a fuel pressure regulator that set's at what PSI the fuel returns to the tank.

The RR is more involved than a FRx install. The only thing I would do before install is let the truck cool down since you will be playing around the turbo.

You don't need to do the in-tank mods first but I would recommend doing them eventually

Andrew explained pretty well. Do the FRx first then the HPX, this way you can route the FRx hose a little better towards the center of the valley. Spray down those fuel plugs good a day or two before you tear into it, the pass. side plug was a bugger but the drivers side rear was easy. I also found using a mini ajustable wrench worked wonders for me on those plugs, plus the modded wrenches Platinum Pete lent me(thanks Pete). I'm shipping them off to Jim Meggawatt for his install and if you need them, the'll go full circle.

Ohh.. snap.. that reminds me.. I have a 9/32 pipe plug that will fit those plugs perfectly if anyone needs it for the FRx install.

Also, when you do the HPX.. makes sure the clamps on the bottoms boots point away from the HPX line.. they can rub and ruin the HPX Line

Thanks for the info guys. I'm still wondering about the FRx though... Clay says on his site that it allows for air to return, if I'm reading it correctly, with "metered return." I guess I'm confused about the difference between "metered return" and "regulated return."

With a metered orfice, a hole, you can't control the exact flow since pressure differences will change it. With a regulator it is much more exact and uses a diaphram that is fully adjustable. The FRx is set to give you 66-68psi by machining the block so that it shims the fuel pressure relief.

I read somewhere that there was a set of o-rings that I should get with one of these kits, because the originals are often messed up. I even saw the ones I need, but I can't remember which ones now. Which are they?

You'll get an o-ring for the FRx but I would get the sleave(type of o-ring) for the fuel regulator line, I did, my stock one was a chewed up. You can get them from Guzzle but since your ordering the FRX, Clay keeps these on hand and sells too Click Replacement O-rings for Ford Diesel Engines

Thanks Mike. Any reason I should get the soft HPx, vs. the hard steel one?

I prefer the hard line version. The only thing that would ever leak could be the O-rings at the HPO rail ports. More of a lifetime part.

I had the rubber HPX in my truck for abt 6 years worked great but a few weeks ago it finally failed and began to leak. I put a new SS HPX in and did the FRx at the same time. I love the FRx no joke saw a 1.5 mpg increase. ( thx Clay) Baja get the SS HPX and FRx. U won't b dissatisfied. Also as stated b4 drop the tAnk and do the pre-pump mods. ITP sells a great kit. Did mine 3 years ago and love it too.
