2003 runs rough

I have a 2003 5.4 that is running very rough. I do not get a service light, how do i diag this problem. Currently i have about 73K on the vehicle, seems too early for a tune up. Also have been having the following . I get "Error MI" in my odometer and it does not register any miles on the odometer, trip, time ect. Could theses issues be related and i have an ECM problem?

If i do need to do a tune up whats the best way to get to the passenger rear plug? That looks like a real pain.

Thank

Jeff

i changed all of my plugs and i used the socket a 4 inc. extension then a 6 inc. ext. then a swiffel then a 12 inc. ext and you either have to sit or lay on the engine

Sounds like you need to replace some bad COPs, coil on plugs. My guess for the "error MI" could be a bad soldering on the board.

Do you have an aftermarket radio that required you to use any electronic add-on modules or adapters?

No aftermarket. truck is stock. I went to Auto Zone today to see if i could get them to pull some error codes. There were none. But the thing ran great today. Not sure what to make of it, bad fuel??

Any chance it rained, your windshield leaks, and water got into the back of the instrument cluster?

OK drove the truck earlt this AM, sputtered and stalled once, then ran fine. Again no check engine light. Wife went out this afternoon and it shook sputtered and stalled on her this time we got a light. Took it to Auto Zone to have the code read.Ran great to auto Z and back. Gave a P0300 misfire on multiple cylinders.
Possible causes:
Ignition system
vacuum leak
injector fault
high/low fuel pressure.

So where do i start??

Well, start with the basics, typically an intermittent miss is electrical. At 73k, it is not unusual to have to replace the COPS...at that mileage, I would replace the plugs just so that I know they are fresh & functioning and by the oem specs should be about 3/4 through their life cycle now.

I would also recommend cleaning the intake & EGR valve, ensuring proper operation as well.

I wouldnt think its a plug. Arent they either good or bad? COP is a possibility, but with the code being so vague i wouldnt know which one to change. Also the ck engine light went off and it is running great again. My wife had let the tank get pretty low is it possible that too much condensation caused water in the tank and this is my issue? I did notice water dripping from the weep hole in the muffler.

Yes it's a possibility, but so is a bad fuel pump. Fuel pumps on the verge of quitting start by acting up when the fuel level is low and then act fine when the tank is 1/2 full or more. I would run the tank down again to see if the problem returns. If it does, you might want to have the fuel pressure tested with a low fuel level just to confirm.

Truck ran great for a few days, and it started up again yesterday afternoon. Fuel level was just about a 1/4 tank when it started to act up.What should fuel pressure be?

Finally got some real codes!!! P0305 and P0316. I haven driven it in a few days and wife took it out today, she said that it started running rough from start. So i hooked up scanner when she got home. Only funny thing was it ran OK after i cleared the codes and i did not get any others.

the 305 is probally going to be a fuel pressure issue, have you replaced your filter?
