well my frustration with this truck continues... 77 f250 with a 460 has a blue mallory coil thing and a unilight dist. i have converted over to a man. choke and that helped the starting... till the temp went down to 2deg. and the truck has sat for 2 days.. now it turns over but will not fire up... i don't know alot but i think it is either a fuel issue or something is wrong with the coil? can anyone help? when it is warmer and has not sat for more than a day it starts ok, takes a few pumps and a cupple of trys... but now when i need it the most it will not start.. what can i do to narrow this down and fix? thanks
It sounds like it's just a matter of the the low temps, is it turning over fast enough to start? the battery may be too weak at those temps to start it.
thanks, the battery is new and is a 850cca . i think it is not getting fuel affter i tried to start it for 20 min. with no luck. i came in and wrote this thread. then went out affter 15 min or so and it started on the 3rd turn of the key...it seems to be when i let the truck sit for a while the fuel is not staying in the pump and it is taking forever to prime the pump? that is my newest best guess. have thought about putting a small elec. pump in before the manual one? anyone think that would work???
It could be that fuel is escaping the fuel bowl as you suspect. Next time it has sat for a few days, pull the air horn off of the carburetor and make sure there is fuel inside.
Putting an electric pump may cause you problems. It would work for a while but you will end up replacing your mechanical pump. Your mechanical pump is not designed for pressure higher than the gravity feed from your tank. You would surely take out the diaphragm in your mechanical pump and fill your block with fuel.
thanks, well it has done it to me today again. there is fuel in the carb... battery is good. but it just will not fire. it has a mallory box coil and that has what apears to be 2 risistors inline ??? is that normal? is there a way to test the coil maybe my coil is shoot? or it just really does not like the -15 deg at night? help please
I know you stated your battery is new but is it fully charged (12.6+) volts? even at 12.1 volts a battery is only at 50% charge and that makes a huge difference especially at the frigid temps you're experiencing.
i have a cheap o wire tester thing that does not see a spark from the coil. but it is hard to tell i am alone today and can only be outside for around 15 min... 6 deg hi... how can i test spark out of the coil?
This won't fix your problem but have you tried to give it a shot of starting fluid? If it is cranking and starts after some cranking, try a shot down the carb before you turn the key for the first time. In that cold of weather, most vehicles in that weather start having trouble.
Check to see if you have 12 volts going to the coil on START. On RUN it should drop back to about 7 volts. If it has low voltage to the coil on START, when it gets cold, it won't have a hot enough spark to start.
had similar problem-put inductive timing light on spark plug wire, taped trigger down with elect. tape. pointed at cab while turning engine over. no fire. coil dead, bought new coil, fixed problem.
