So I am finally had a bit of down time and am trying to get my ignition switch back to factory….The key was warn and was stuck in the run position….swapped a new one in, now I can turn it on and off….except I cant. Pulled the column covers off, I can move the actuator rod separate from the lock cylinder and vice versa (it acts like there is no connection between the two)…the electrical switch responds to the rod properly, so the question is is there a way to replace the mechanism in the metal part of the column, or am I better off replacing the whole thing (steering column etc). If I do do a column swap what is the newest year I can put in (would love to swap to one with the wiper controls on the stalk)
Sounds like two possible causes here, the upper actuator or the teeth of the gears on the lock cylinder are worn out. The upper actuator controls the actuator rod to the ignition switch via means of the cylinder gears. Not a bad job if you have a steering wheel puller just takes a bit of time to disassemble the column. Lock cylinders with keys can be had fairly inexpensive so if you can find the upper actuator which I imagine is also not very expensive you could be into the project much less then a new column. If you could find a used column the swap is very easy also. Remove the dash trim. Remove the C-clip on the steering rod, loosen the collar bolt under the dash and the two column retaining bolts followed by the 4 on the fire wall, disconnect the turn signal harness and ignition and yank it out. Pretty straight forward either way.
