Go to you tube there are a lot of videos on how to tune your carb.
Without tools you can use the high idle method as has been described but you really need a tach and a vacuum guage to be certain otherwise you have to do plug chops to get more accurate.
That truck is beautiful!! You will really enjoy having that for a project.Determine which engine you have,as that will make using these message boards a lot easier for you and the folks trying to help you out on diagnostics. Please get the vacumm gauge first! That is a unparrelled diagnosis tool, and you will get plenty of practice using it!Lots of experience on this site, and many knowledgeable folks about the in's and out's of our trucks.
Well, after posting this, I went out to find a vacuum gauge and tachometer to test with. Went to two Napas and an Autozone, nothing there, the staff barely knew what I was looking for. I guess most people come to these stores now to get batteries and wipers or something. So I gave up and thought I would come back on this forum to ask where I should buy these tools online.
So I fiddled with what I thought was the curb idle adjustment until it seemed like it was running richer when warmed up, which was my intention. I think I was just hallucinating because now it runs exactly like it did before (when it warms up the idle starts to shake the whole truck, so I put it in park and give it a little gas. It evens out then. )
After fiddling with it I thought I should run and get some beer of course.
So the gas gauge doesn't work, and my shop checked everything except the floater so I was going to either check that out or have my shop check it out later. But in any case I was pretty sure I had a half a tank of gas left, but ended up dying in a busy intersection. Long story short, got it towed to the shop, they informed me I had run it dry. (I didn't really know until then.)
So that day was shot.
Still need to adjust the timing I think, unless there is another explanation for why the curb idle, while warmed up and in drive, starts to run really rough and shake the whole truck.
In any case I love my truck, she is a beauty and I hope to keep her running really well for years.
Yep, Sears.com, harborfreight.com, I am sure you can buy on line if you are not near one of these outlets. Napa, or Pep boys will be able to get you these tools too, but they will be more expensive, so will Sears.
If you got that multi tester, you could figure out if it is the sending unit, or the wiring that is causing your gas guage not to work. Got any interior shots of your truck?
