Probably not really a modification but my 00 X didn't having working locks when I bought it 2 months ago. (the radio turns on and off by itself also). Anyway, within a few weeks of buying it (I have never locked the doors on ANY of my vehicles EVER in our town) I got burglarized. So I guessed it was time to have working locks. I had an AutoPage C3 RS730 two way remote start pager. I LOVE it. Have always wanted a remote start. Had to bypass my computer though because something in the relay kept shorting out actuators. The rep said this is a common problem in Fords. True or not true? He said the thing happening with my radio switching on/off and to cd and back and changing stations on it's own was common also. So next I am going to have the carpets ripped up (we have 6 daughters and it will only get horribly stained anyway) and have a spray in liner put in instead. Then it's a dvd/cd player radio so I don't have to deal with it switching anymore. Anyone have any of the new touchscreens installed that they really like? Any advice/experience with these would b greatly appreciated.
I had some similar issues. The VSM shorted out and took out my door closed sensors, door lock actuators and accy delay. I replaced the VSM, but didn't get it programmed, the door locks work now, but I still have accy delay and door ajar issues that need some programming.
Bypassing is okay, but if the VSM takes out the GEM you'll be in for more headaches. It's worth checking out the common stuff like checking for water on top of the fuse box.
VSM is Vehicle Security module, it handles door sensors and locks.
GEM is the General Electronics Module, which is Ford for Body computer. It handles the computer related functions that the Engine and Transmission computer doesn't. I believe your GEM is mounted on the back side of the fuse box under the dash.
Well the guy said since he's already bypassed or something that he would use that same bypass for the radio and such once I pick one. If he just keeps doing that with everything will I need the vsm and gem thingies? lol I spent the last few minutes looking this up on this website and it seems a LOT of people have trouble with this. So maybe it would be better to NOT use those vsm things b/c they seem to have a real issue.
Maybe I could call some wrecking yards and see if there is these things available? But then I'll have to pay that guy to UNbypass huh? Would this be the thing that might be causing my radio to behave as if it's possessed?
I'm not sure how messed it can get, but I've read around that a bad VSM can short out the GEM. Frying the GEM will cause issues with the power windows and wipers. It seemed to me like if it's let go, there will be a lot of other bypassing and work to get everything running.
