Ok Fellas,
Was under the truck yesterday doing normal maintenance. Looked inside the right front tire and behind the "U"joint there is a bearing on the end of the Axel. The rubber ring is loose do in need to replace the bearing there??? Is it a difficult fix?? Anyone ever do this???
the only bearings in the front hubs are actually inside the hub assy it self. sounds like your'e looking at the vacuum seal for the auto hubs.it's a seal inside a seal. the inner half rotates inside the outer half which is held captive by the press fit in the hub while also sealing around the axle shaft.you need to remove the spindle to replace it, and you'll need a seal install tool to put it back in. this is assuming, of course, you've got auto hubs. i'm thinking as long as it isn't tore or your auto hubs aren't working (90% don't) i wouldn't worry to much about it.
On my truck, it is the driver's side (short shaft coming out of the front transfer case). It is a rubber dust cover/o-ring.
My dealer stated to let it go as it would cost me 2 arms and 2 legs to take everything aprt to replace/fix.... and it will happen again.
Not sure from your description is this was what you were referencing when you stated "right side of vehicle"??? But I can only assume there a few places they are used?
Good luck... but I do not think you have much to worry about.
oh......it's that one. when i did my ball joints both my dust seals were like that.they kinda just ride there keeping out big stuff like rocks, branches, mudclods, etc. as long as it isn't leaking oil your'e good.but like weekend warrior said, they aint hard to do.
OK I've read all replies, I think the best description I can give just to clarify...The dust guard, as it has been called, Kinda looks like a large "lance Armstrong Bracelet" If you know what I mean...but in black...and it is on the inside of the "u joint" on the right end of the front axel. I am happy to say I saw a front end guy today and he said no worries they all happen. I will take a photo tomorrow but don't know how to post a photo on here, sad after three years...
