I recently upgraded my '99s headlights to the '02-'04 style and bought/tried some of the cheap generic fake (blue) "hid" bulbs.
These bulbs are crap, they are not as bright as a stock bulb is and I want something brighter-(the brighter the better) I am considering the Silverstar ULTRAS, but am reading up on TRUE HID conversions.......
What do YOU have? and are you satisfied with it? and is it plug and play? are the ULTRAS worth about $45 a set-(they are on sale at Advance auto parts right now) comments/opinions appreciated. Thanks!
Even though it might be ugly as sin, I wish there was a conversion to put GLASS headlights in our trucks. My '89 Wrangler has triple bright glass lights and they are far superior to my 2000 PSD's lights.
Jason, I agree on the glass headlights. Who was the "Einstien" that dreamed that plastic would stay clear after two years?
What's wrong with the old 7" round anyway????
.
With that said, all three of my vehicles have silverstars in them and I have not had to replace one in quite a while.
I also just did a 02-04 headlight swap on my '99 XL. Looks much better. I also used Silverstar Ultras and they are plenty bright. I have the regular Silverstars on my Jeep and when I pulled them side by side you could really see the difference in brightness. The Ultras had a wider and longer beam than the regular Silverstar bulbs. Really happy with them. I found my Ultras brand new on eBay for $26 shipped.
Well I have a different experience with Silverstars. I installed a set a few years ago in my VW, I did not see much of an improvement and one of them burnt out within a few months.

What VW are you driving?
If you have trouble seeing at night, the main cause of that is the plastic lenses get fogged and disperse the beam.
Sometimes the reflectors lose thier reflectivity and the beam gets dispersed because of that, too.
I've heard of kits that you can buy that will buff out the fogged lenses, but have not tried it myself yet.
If the reflector is fogged (rare) the only option is to replace the whole unit.
Great info so far!! I too wish that our trucks still used a glass headlight!!
Wonder if anyone could make a GLASS replacement for what we have now?
The commercial economics for something like that just isn't "in the cards".
Glass molding is very different from plastic molding, lots more heat energy used, and different handling procedures. Then, you have to decide whether it's going to be bonded to a plastic reflector or manufactured as a sealed beam complete.
By the time you're done getting it DOT-approved, you'd have to sell them for a lot more than the current factory ones, and very few are buying those, given the aftermarket, made-in-China mentality of the American consumer.
okay before i get flamed here I bought these Headlights & Fog Lights in 80/100w in the 5500k-6000k for only 11.99 when i ordered the pigtails i needed from these guys, all i can say is that is the best $12.00 i have ever spent. These lights are high quality and are brighter than the silverstars i had, one burnt out thats why i replaced them.... I just ordered the H-10's for the fog lights too. I also bought their led's for the door open lights on the door panels, led's for the dash lights, and their super bright festoon dome lights for in the cab... WOW what a differance...
It was a 2001 TDI Jetta. Only a couple of years old when I put the Silverstars in. The car had decent headlight, I was looking for something better - I did not see much difference.
Been running this HID kit for about 4 months now and LOVE it! I bought em back then for 80 bucks and now their down to 50.. It seems cheap but trust me, their great!
If you want hi and low beam, they have a seperate bulb for that. Its an extra 25$ for it though.. since the H13 is a single hi low bulb anyways..
