Noob

Noob here. Just purchased a 1989 F250, 7.3, C6 4 wheel drive. It needs a few things fixed like a water pump and some funky charging system problems and funky stuff with the cluster. Truck runs good. A little slow compared to my 03 Ram cummins. I plan on fixing that. Cant have the wife run away from me driving the Dodge.

I am a avid road racer and a VW/Audi tech so I am pretty familiar with diesels however the idi is new too me. The wife wants another kid so I gave her the 4 Door Dodge (no minivan for me) and bought the Ford to play with and haul the race cars with.

The plan is to replace the leaking water pump, tighten up the steering, figure out the charging system that may just be the batteries and figure out why I intermittenly loose the tach signal and my fuel gauges get goofy after driving for a little while. I think it may be related too the charging system issue. Then after the basics are taken care of I think I will try the NA mods that I have seen on the board for a little extra power and then onto some sort of turbo sysem. Thinking the hypermax and a used power stroke intercooler will do the trick. The seems to be stock with the exception of a after market exhaust with a one chamber flow master.

Here is a pick if I did it right.

How about the other side. Its a 20 footer with a older ok repaint. Looks like the truck was originally white.

Interior shot. Its actually pretty clean and makes me believe that the odometer is correct at 120k miles. No cracks in the dash and the seat is in great condition. The foam is sagging a little on the driver side and my 200lb *** slides over to the door.

Sounds like a good plan! If your a VW/Audi tech, then you'll find these IDI's to be very simple engines to work on. One thing is for sure, if you ever have any problems or questions about your Truck, post 'em up and your guaranteed to get an answer!

And a big welcome to the forum!

Hey thanks for the welcome.

How about a pic of one of my older projects.

My 1986 Saleen mustang open track monster. The car is 86-120 the only Saleen made in Canyon red with the tan interior. Single turbo 5.0 with the usual heads/cam/intake and a custom tune with diablo sport software. I sold the car to my buddy who is now restoring the car. I was afraid of wadding the car up.

This is the road racer that I just sold. 91 Camaro fully prepped for NASA camaro mustang challenge. I got my license and my first 8 races done in this car. Sold it to pay off the wifes car and have a little bit of money ready for when the next kid arrives.

And finally to keep the post on topic this is what the Ford will be pulling. 1994 VW golf sport. This is my current fun car/rally x/open tracker. Just something to keep me busy until the new race car is finished.

Evilgt,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

IDI diesels are not to hard to work on.

With your first project, the water pump.

Whne you pull the bolts out of the one on the truck, stick them in the same hole on the new pump.
There are several different lengths of bolts, and a couple of them can get into the timing gears if you put the wrong bolt in the right hole.

When you clean up the front of the timing gear cover, the bolt holes in the center of the cover are right in front of the timing gears.
When you reinstall those bolts, thread sealant on the threads or you may leak coolant into the oil pan around the bolt threads.

Also as you are pulling off the AC compressor/power steering pump brackets, a few pictures may be in order.
Same thing on the alternator/vacuum pump side.
Sometimes it can be a bear figuring out how the brakets go back on.

Welcome evilgt. I like the cars but I was disappointed to see that the VW wasn't a TDI. LOL. As you can see from my sig. I have a VW TDI. I love it, wife hates it. Awesome fuel economy, pain in the a@# to work on. You'll like working on the truck and when you have to buy parts for it you'll like it even more in comparison with the VW's.
