if the van has been over heating throughout the year, i would be more concerned about your head gasket being blown and warped heads at this point. just because the h/g is blown, doesn't mean you will have a milkshake for oil. if a water jet is blown out on the gasket is leaking into the engine, the car could be burning up the coolant, and be forcing hot exhaust gasses into the cooling system causing an over heat. i would know, happened to me on my civic... lol
but yes, if the impeller is bad, it will cause an over heat due to lack of circulation.
i would still check the thermostat, as over heating can mess it up. also, a stuck thermostat or clogged water jets can cause overheating too.
Have you ever run the engine without the rad cap to see if you get good flow when the t-stat opens? You could also have a clogged radiator or elsewhere in the system.

+1 on the radiator, especially if it is the original. I had the same problem, replaced the t-stat and radiator, then full flush and was good to go!
Cheapest thing to replace is the thermostat, this will cause the engine to overheat if it is stuck closed; or at least run very hot. For $10, may as well replace it. Check if the upper hose is hot & feel for a surge when you squeeze the upper hose. Also check the flow in the rad as the engine warms up, you should be able to see turbulence when the thermostat opens, indicating the impellor has blades on it! Is the coolant looking nice & clean? you could have blocked water passages, this is possible if the coolant has not been changed regularly (at least every 2 years) & has caused rusting in the engine block. This is a more difficult problem & it might be better to get a shop to clear the corrosion.
