Exhaust system

So my truck is currently in the shop getting a new motor put in it along with an edelbrock intake and 4bl carb set up and I am considering doing headers on it as well as possibly a whole new exhaust setup. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions as far as what brand or style to go with. It has I believe either 2.5" or 2.75" pipes and dual flowmaster mufflers on it now with stock exhaust manifolds and sounds good and loud. But I'd like it to be a bit more loud and abnoxious. I was thinking Hooker Headers and glasspacks with 3" pipes. Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

My 76 With the 302 has full length header that are hedman headers. Hooker are better just didnt have the money. And i also have true duals not cat with 18" glasspacks that i busted while they were hot by shoving a water hose up the tail pipe. My buddy said he heard me from a mile away when i was gettin on the throttle one day. I like it but thats just me. Oh yeah the pipes are 2"

My '74 with 302, Holley 600 4 bbl and Edelbrock Performer exhales through Flo-Tech headers (with 1/4" mounting flange) and 2 1/4" duals and 3 chamber Flowmasters. It's not enormous loud, but sound great at idle and also when you romp on it.
My exhaust guy had tole me a small block doesn't need anything larger than 2 1/4, FWIW.

Any of the above but not 3" pipes. All the heat and velocity will be gone and the moisture will all condense out of the exhaust gasses in your pipe.

My opinion..... 2 1/4 to 2.5" bullets 2 1/4 tail in front of the rear tire. An H pipe will balance the sound between sides. It may drone you right out of the cab but if you fatten up you idle a half turn or so you will get that drone toned down while your at stop signs. It will be lean and will need a bit of fuel.

Well QT, I'm not copyin you, more competing! But I also just want it a bit louder and meaner sounding! I'm thinkin I may just leave the FM's on for now and just do headers first, and then if I end up wanting louder I'll try glasspacks, or if I really wanna go all out, cutouts! And mine will be w/o cat as well since it's never had one and not required like yours if it's registered down here.

If you're not concerned about it being to loud, but want/require a muffler you might give a look at these Schoenfield's, they give a full 9 decible reduction in sound and are a full 6 inches long!!!

I'd love to run open headers, but I wouldn't be able to get it thru emissions every year like that. Are those Schoenfield's a muffler? It looks more like an exhaust pipe tip. I've never heard of them before, have you used them?

I sure have used them, on my race car!!! They are actually a muffler for a sprint car or an open wheel modified, I have always welded them directly to the headers. They are available from many racing shops, or you can order them through Speedway Motors. And yes, they are pretty much designed like an exhaust tip with a straight through design, set up to attatch directly to a 3" or 3.5" collector, but they are available in a few other configurations.
