This should be fairly simple. My engine on the '99 Explorer 4.0 SOHC takes a while to heat up, and the temp gauge needle never gets much above the lower range on the marker. I'm sure it needs a T stat. It looks like there are 4 bolts for the housing. It also looks like I might have to pull the intake??

Any pointers? Its quite cold outside and I'd like to fool around as little as possible.

Spray some pb blaster on the thermostat cover bolts. Pull the manifold cover - four small bolts. Pull the intake hose. Pull the radiator hose. Remove the three bolts holding the thermostat housing cover and remove the thermostat and gasket. Reverse the procedure to install. Top off the coolant. Turn on the heater to max heat and start the engine. Run to full operating temperture to bleed the air out of the system. Shut off and top off the coolant.

I haven't done one on the SOHC, but on the OHV it helps to remove the serp belt. Doing so causes the tensioner to spring out of the way of the 3rd tstat bolt.
