As I continue my search for my Powerstroke, I came across a 2004 F550. It's not a working truck, it's a big version of an F250 (ok, more like an F350 since it has 10 lug dualies in the back).. I'm going to take it for a test ride today and see how it feels. It's high up, which is really important and it's 4wd. It does have the 6.0l, which I've read is the year where there's lots of issues.
So, from those who know, how is it mechanically? Any issues I need to be concerned with or look out for?
For those who are going to ask, no I don't own a boat, horse trailer, or anything of the sort. I love big trucks and want something that will get me where I want to go, when I want to go, and haul whatever I want.
If you can post the VIN #, someone here can get you an Oasis report, which will tell you any issues that were fixed under warranty. Some trucks had very few problems, some had lots. You're right, '04s are iffy, but you could find a decent one. Sounds like a nice truck, but with no weight in the rear, it's gonna ride rough. Good luck.
Just beware that if you do a lot of highway running, that F-550 with the 4.88 rear end will run out of gears. The company I work for has a 550 with the 7.3. The best you can do without redlining it is about 65, and that's at 2,500 RPMs. If you are not pushing it, cruising speed highway wise is about 55. All this data is also assuming you are optioned with the ZF6, although I would believe that the 4R100, with 1 less gear would be even worse.
