84 6.9 problem

Truck had fresh fuel filter, return lines and T's, replaced one leaky injector (hot injector line) with a used one from my parts engine, and ran a quart of type-F in the new filter. Has been running great for the last three weeks since I did all that, but now another problem has popped up.

It started yesterday morning, I noticed what sounds like an exhaust leak at the manifold, only at mid to higher rpm, clutch in and it would idle down and go away, rev up in neutral and the 'popping' comes back about mid throttle and stays till rpm droppes again, climbing hills or coasting down them the sound stays and the temp climbs up, was running between the A and L in NORMAL on the stock gauge. Has been running just over half on the highway (100kmph) previously.

The thing that really gets me is that the sound will come and go. When it stops and sounds normal it will run great and the temp goes back down where it should be, then for no reason it will start up again and the temp will start rising.

I checked all the injector lines and only one felt slightly warmer than the others but so little that I'm not sure. My car is parked for the winter so this is my only transportation to get 90km to work and back each day. I hate being broken down, especially in the snow! What should I be looking for here?

Do a coolant system leak down test. Pump it up and see if it's bleeding down. You may have a failing head gasket or cavitation. Does your overflow bottle ever overflow? If so you may be building exhaust gases in the coolant system. get your hand on one of these.

Also a compression check wouldn't hurt. Also while doing the compression check through the glow plug hole, you can put air pressure through it to see if you get any bubbles popping up in the radiator which would also show a possible head gasket failure.

I checked the coolant, rad is about 1.5" down from the cap as it usually is and looks ok (one of the last things I need to change yet)... but I feel like a bit of an idiot, my oil level was just below the add line, I'm thinking at higher rpm it was pumping more oil out than was draining back down in to the pan . It's sprung a leak from the front of the engine somewhere, doesn't look like the crank seal, coming from higher up, IP gear cover or timing cover by the looks of it.

I hope I didn't kill any bearings. I drained the oil and didn't see any metal particals in it. I had a fresh jug of RotellaT in the garage so I changed it. Will see tomorrow if it'll be ok. Started it up and it sounds happy as ever and runs smoothley. Oil gauge never moved much from it's regular position.... gotta get some real gauges in there, the only instrument that works properly in the entire cluster is the temp gauge!

Thanks for the tips, hopefully the oil was the culprit, if not i'll be back.
