I have an 04 Montaineer. I recently replaced the alternator and now my check engine light is on. It's trouble code p0506 which is low idle. Mechanic scanned it and his scanner told him to disconnect the negative battery cable, turn on the ligts and pump the brakes twice. that cleared the light for a few days but then it came back on. I keep seing to clean the throttle body. Andybody dealt with this before?
Does your Mountaineer have the V8 or V6? I'm not sure about the V6, but the V8 has electronic throttle body. I suspect the V6 does as well. Anyway, the first thing to check is the air filter to make sure it is not nearly plugged. Also make sure all the air intake tubing is installed corrected (aligned and clamps snug). Check for other vacuum leaks and you might consider cleaning the MAF sensor as well. A few weeks back I removed the throttle body on my 4.6L Mountaineer and cleaned it with STP Throttle Body Cleaner. I was quite surprised how dirty the back side of the throttle plate was along with the upper intake. I followed this up with an application of SeaFoam as a cylinder decarb and put new plugs in before they seize in place. The truck runs quite a bit stronger now. I've never experienced a V8 that was so easy to change plugs on and remove the throttle body.
A P0506 DTC trouble code may be caused by one or more of the following:
A vacuum leak
An air restriction in the intake air path or exhuast
A faulty positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve
Damaged/failed/dirty throttle body
Internal engine problem
Failed PCM
Mine is a V8 and the throttle body was not difficult at all to remove. It probably took less than 30 minutes total to remove and reinstall, including the time to clean it and the upper intake.
