OK. Time for the FNG to man up and ask for help. I am looking to replace my 99 F-150 with an Excursion. I have searched many of the posts and have found the advice very helpful. However, I couldn't find anything on the V-8 motor in Excursions. I would rather have the V-10, but economics and the speed most of the excursions have been scooped up make me think this is a good opportunity at a good price. Are there any major problems with the 8 cylinders in a '00? I plan on using it strictly as a family truckster. I don't own anything to tow. Would it be feasible to replace it with a v-10 in the future or is that a crack pipe idea? Thanks.
I have a 2000 with the 5.4L engine. You won't win any races with it, but it will get you anywhere you need to go - as long as towing anything bigger than a light boat isn't in your plans that is... The Triton 5.4 is a fairly common engine and has a few problems, but nothing so serious as to scare you off. Some have been known to throw a spark plug. I have 135K on mine and the only under-hood problem has been a couple of exhaust manifold studs broke and needed to be replaced. I don't know about changing it out for a V10. I had an F-250 with a V10 and loved it. I always figured I'd look into swapping my V8 for the V10 if anything ever really went wrong with it. Looking forward to seeing other responses.
I have a 2003 with the 5.4 and it runs great with 83k on it. Like Snuffy said, not the fastest, but it gets around just fine. You'd be surprised how much it can tow if you need it to.
That said, if I could do it again and find a good deal on a v10 I'd probably have gone that route since the gas mileage is very similar. Either way you'll be happy with the truck. We love ours.
The 5.4 is a great engine - The version used in the Ex. is the 230hp version so as others have mentioned you wont win any races but it will be fine for what it sounds like you are going to use it for. I don't know what transmission the 5.4 has - but the V10 has the same as the 7.3 Powerstroke. Either way you're getting a great truck!
If you are not doing any really serious towing, dollar for dollar, I would recommend the v8 instead of the v10. The v8 is less expensive to buy, and less expensive to work on. This ford v8 has a lot of miles under its belt and is very dependable.
If the v8 won't work for you, I would recommend you skip the v10 and go straight to a diesel..7.3 ltr powerstroke recommended.
thanks for all the responses. I plan on looking at it Sunday.
Mine is an 04' 4x4 XLT with the 5.4. I think it was the first year with 5.4 and 4x4 but not for sure. I like it. Mileage is decent. Pickup could be better, but not terrible. It has 4:10 gears and LS which helps alot. I plan a performance exhaust in the future and maybe a cold air intake system as well, that should help. I don't do any heavy towing just a quad here or there. I think the 00-02 had the spark plug blowout problem and was supposedly fixed in the 03-05, but I don't know for sure. I haven't had the issue yet. I bought mine last year in Sept. 08 for $12,200 with 64K on it. I have just reached 74K and still running good. Good luck.
actually.............there are many more than just one.
You V10 guys are awfully sensitive for a group that has such big....strong....displacements.
fortunately, it looks like the orig poster asking the question was able to get the info he needed in order to make his decision before the drama took over.
How many V10s have you owned and how many 2V 5.4L have you owned?
He stated his opinion on going straight to diesel. You said "there is always one". That is how drama is started. From what I've seen here, V10s outnumber diesel owners so you think you are right, but from my view point, you started the drama.

Mighty strong statements for a New User with his First Truck, eh? If it is
your first truck, how did you come to such conclusions?
