I was reading a post on GPR questions and found Guzzles Stancor GPR page. It mentions the shunt that some GPRs have. What does the shunt do, if anything? And is it necessary to reinstall it when doing a Stancor install?

AFAIK it's only found on the Cali programmed rigs, which are wired and programmed just a bit differently than the 49 state trucks. The shunt allows a separate connection for each bank to be made to the GPR, and it's highly resistance sensitive so if you have a dead glow plug, it will kick off the SES light and you'll get a code for a dead glow plug on the right or left bank. If you install the Stancor GPR on a truck with a shunt, you'll just have to bypass the shunt by connecting the wires for left and right banks right to the switched terminal of the GPR.

The reason I ask is that my truck had one originally, but I took it off when I replaced the original GPR a couple of years ago. I did not see any real functionality to it.
I wonder if this is part of why I'm having cold start/run issues now?
If your cold start issue is with the GP system, it is not due to the shunt but probably a GPR that has burnt contacts or some dead GPs.
The shut has been successfully installed back on a Stancor GPR by bending the "wings" of the shunt to clear the obstructions on the body of the Stancor GPR. I believe that most of the OBS 7.3's also have the shunt.

Yea, I just get a lot of questions about the Stancor and a shunt from OBS guys.... I am ASSUMING ... but that's never got me far other than getting me a new name............

I guess my question is this,,, Is the shunt needed or can it be eliminated?
I have it in my toolbox, but didn't think it had much purpose.

I guess it depends on how you have the wiring hooked up to the GPR. If you just got rid of the shunt without re-configuring the wiring you probably aren't getting power to the GP's.

The wiring that was on either side of the shunt went to the switched side of the GPR. Does the shunt provide some sort of resistance or ????. I don't mean to sound stupid, but the only stupid questions are the ones not asked.

If you moved the wires like that you should be good to go. Not sure why you are still having problems... sorry I can't help more.
