After I check my oil I have a very hard time getting my dipstick back in.
It was almost impossible last time , I had to use 2 hands and lots of pushing to get it back in.
Anyone?
I'm worried there's a small crack in the tube somewhere I can't see. I'm trying to delay replacing the tubing until when the pan has to be replaced. No leaks yet...knock on wood!
You guys say yours is also hard to get in?
How hard?
Mines almost impossible.
Like it can take 10 minutes of turning it around and pushing and pulling.
Im going to quit checking the oil it doesnt ever need any anyway.........................
Might take a look at where the bracket that holds the tube to the valve cover comes together and see if it was bent when someone pulled the valve cover.
I destroyed my dipstick tube when I pulled my valve cover, and i would suspect that yours may have been slightly damaged the same way.
I think the dealer quoted me 45 bucks for new tube and dipstick, i am sure ed could beat that. I got a used one for 10 bucks though.
Easy to replace, 1 bolt on the valve cover and it pulls right out of the pan, just an O ring on the bottom of the tube to seal it in.
When I bought my truck, the handle on the dipstick was broken off, so you could not put the dipstick all the way in without losing it.
The first thing I did was to buy a new dipstick, and out of the box it WOULD NOT go in all the way. Not even close.
I was frustrated, so I compared it to the stock dipstick. The factory one had been ground down a tiny bit at the tip. About 1/16" narrower for the length of about 1".
So i got out the 'ol angle grinder and made mine just a little bit pointier- not much, mind you, just a tiny bit, and holy crap- it goes in and out without any problem now.
I have NO idea what it was hanging up on, but it's way nicer now. I still have to use two hands, because otherwise it flexes too much, but it's not a problem at all.
Mine got to be a real PITA to push back in. I carefully pushed the top of the dipstck tube about an inch toward the firewall and now it slides in with ease. I think laying on top of the motor to work on it bent the bracket.
dipsticks are a PITA because of weird size/shape if I can fit it into a box UPS charges by the size and or weight and that screws up the price and might as well by local.
