Ok sooo when I purchased my vehicle about to years ago and always notice that it had very firm shifts and exspecially in od. Some people told me it was the chip but I never really minded it for about 5 months after I bought it. When one day one the road traveling to reno the transmission keep popping out of od so only acting the a three speed which sucked. Finally the truck wouldnt go any where with the od light flashing. Finally after sitting turned around and drove back home and pulled the tranny out with a senior trans tech. He could believe Id being driving with no friction material on the forward clutches and they were warped, brown fluid of course and internal forward clutch sanp ring had been off for a while. Overhaul vs. Black box with warranty. Black box a HEAVY DUTY build trans ready to go. Noticed ever since this one has been in the it shifts the same as the stock one did. however now and then some gears will just seem to hang up for a while then SLAM it gear!!! ouch WFT!!!! Does anyone seem to know what is causing this??? Yes it has a deep sump pan and a larger cooler. Whats going on the trans barely has maybe 10K on it????
What codes are you getting? P0500 is a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) malfunction.
The VSS is in the rear differential. If you're unsure how old it is, replace it. You can try removing it and wiping it off (no cleaners), just use a rag. Sometimes the particle buildup on the VSS will interfere with the signal and cause problems.
I'm having a similar issue. Unfortunately, the easy stuff isn't correcting the problem, so I'm trying to chase down an electrical gremlin.
Try cleaning and/or replacing the VSS. That's the cheaper way to go. Have the codes pulled. Fix those issues. Have the codes cleared. If codes reappear, you'll have a better idea of where to start.
Let us know what codes you're getting. We love fixing stuff.
No codes what so ever ill check tomorrow at work. All modules always pass except some exhaust valve circuit malfunction at times. Im fighting the bouncing speedo as well worse at higher freeway speeds and Ive already replaced the rear diff vss it was like 20 bucks i did it like 8 months ago soo yeah.........
If the OD light is flashing there is a trans code. You may not have a tool that can read it, but it's there. Fixing this without the code will be hard and expensive.
Hi there I have a 97 f250 diesel 4x4 and im currently as ford diesel tech.

Couple of things, what chip (or programmer) do you have?
Do you have a stock setting?
Did you replace EVERYTHING in the trans? (i.e. Torque Converter)
Ok when I replaced the tranny i did install a new rear abs sensor. The NEW tranny I purchased has heavy duty torque converter, springs, clutches and even steels. So everything is upgraded, Its just in a factory case. B&M deep sump pan and a larger trans cooler. The lovely pos chip i have is a super chip. The settings are dont install it and its stock or you can only setting it to a towing or perfomance setting thats it
Which was probably voided by the superchips,
since even in stock it'll leave its mark. LOL.
No Way!!!
He works at the steelership! (according to OP )
And he is a diesel tech there no less!(according to OP)
They would bill ford in a flash on this trans to make the labor.
