How important is gapping your sparkplugs?

How important is gapping your sparkplugs? I ask this because a year ago when I bought 8 new autolight copper sparkplugs, I never gapped them.

My 25's always seem to come right at .044".

I check but rarely have to adjust one.

It wise to always check the gap, but most of them come with the proper gap.

I think you should be okay, but feel free to check them.
