Fuel Pump Question

Hi, I'm new to this section of the board but not to FTE, I'm usually on the 48 to 60 board. I was recently given a 1986 Ford F-150 2wd pickup 5.0 fuel injected by my neighbor and last weekend we pulled the bed off and replaced both in tank fuel pumps (it has dual rear tanks). What I would like to know is what is the proper fuel pressure supposed to be? With the two new fuel pumps in each tank and the third one on the driver's side frame rail, which works properly, and a new fuel filter I've got a steady 38 PSI at the fuel rail. Is this the correct pressure? It seems to run fine now but before the fuel pump change and only the front frame pump working it would run out of gas and die until it built up enough pressure and would start and run for a few moments before doing it again. At that time the fuel pump pressure was at 38 PSI but wouldn't remain steady. Thanks for your help.

your pressure should be fine.. with what i have been reading on.. alot of the performance guys are only running fuel pressure in the 40's on a 302... with the in-tank pumps not working it could of been starving the main pump for fuel causing it to die and have inconsistent readings on the pressure...

38 psi sounds normal. If you pull the vacuum line off the fuel rail regulator, the pressure should jump up.

Thanks guys for the info I appreciate it. I found some information in a repair manual yesterday that said for the 5.0 the pressure should be between 35 and 45 PSI so mine is within range. With the new fuel pumps it seems to run fine now without dying. Does anyone know if the timing chain and gears go bad on these later 5.0 engines like the 60's and 70's V-8 Fords did? The timing seems a little sluggish on this one even with the timing set at the factory designated 10 degrees BTDC so I just wonder if the timing chain has slipped a couple of teeth after the plastic overlay has broken off.
