hi guys and gals!i have a 2003 f-150 xl extended cab with manual shifting 4wd.4.6 litre motor with auto tranny.last few times out hunting ive tried to use 4wd,get the light ,will also go into low but only the rear wheels spin im not getting any engagment in the front atall!after reading several posts on here ive basically come to the conclusion that the actuator is pooched.am i correct?i distinctly remember last year trying to go to 4wd and it sounded like and felt like it was only partially engaging.then a loud cluck and no problems the rest of last year ,this year nothing atall.
with you being manual 4x4 i think it is more than the actuator but i may be wrong. i thank the actuator is just for the twist 4x4 or button 4x4. maybe someone else will chime in to help.
went under and there is a actuator under there ,im going to change as soon as the truck stops dripping blasted snow all over me!i hope im right as i cant see it being anything else ,will report back on my success or lack of!
was replacing the actuator and carefully tapping it out of the mounting ear, well you can guess where this is going ,snapped the blasted ear right off! well now i got a whole other set of problems to say the least.it looks like it could be welded back on by a pro so im going to have to patiently wait for a fella to get back into town thats suppose to be a excellent welder of all types.(tig ,mig etc).note to others thinking of replacing actuator ,be very very carefull!!i thought i was being very gentle but i still managed to cause a disaster!sprayed with release oil, used vise grips so i wouldnt hit the ear and still it broke, maybe it was weak but i doubt it.arggggh
all fixed!went to one shop and the clowns said you couldnt weld the ear back on ,boy what a bunch of no minds they were.had it mig welded back on and with the new actuator in place i got my 4wd back in time for the snowy season.
