Knock 95 E150

Will a bad steering gear knock when driving over bumps? I have a knock I can't seem to locate, all suspension parts are new including rotors, bearings, calipers, pads, ball joints, tie rods, etc.

I can hear and feel the knock through the gas pedal. If I jack up the front I can simulate the knock by moving the passenger tire back and forth and it sounds like it's coming from the gear box. Do the same with the driver's side and it doesn't knock. It definitely sounds like it's closer to the driver's side.

Before this started I was getting a steering wheel sticking at times. The steering still feels okay just feels like the front wheels are loose when it knocks over rough roads.

Hi, have you checked engine mounts and tranny mounts. When you give it gas in drive with foot on brake have someone see if the engine moves farther than it should. Or safer way is to do the worm and look underneath and look for cracks in rubber on mounts on engine and then tranny. Sounds as if you have covered most of the other suspects. Good Luck. Peace !

Trailing arm bushings, they are the bars running from the I-beams toward the frame, are round, bumps cause them to shift around in the mount, causing a knocking noise.

Well this what I've found so far...I replaced the bottom shock mounts and the bolts were working loose, gonna have to figure out what to do about that, my torque wrench must be off I used a different one on the wheel bearings and they are now fine. I haven't driven it enough yet but I think I still may have one more issue.

The mounts are all good and so are the arm bushings.

How about the steering box output shaft. Maybe loose when under no load condition?

You mean where it's connected to the pitman arm? I do have play in the linkage from the firewall to the gear box but I don't know if that's normal.

Well in a van that age there will be some play in the steering wheel side to side about one inch or so, so that would be normal. Yes I am speaking of where the shaft comes out into the pitman arm. If there is play on that side of the box then that could be a problem. You mentioned it had some sticky steering issues at some point. I would think that it might have some gear box trouble. To much play in the pitman arm and the shaft could cause that. Also if there is wear in the shaft to the pitman arm there would be some unresposive steering. so when traveling down the road and hitting a bump would cause a shift in the linkage and cause a bumping sound. Just my 2 cents. Peace !
