Hey guys, I got the truck a while ago, with some issues! Anyways, The return lines are leaking and I got a new kit to fix them this week.
When I got the truck, i noticed the water separator (86 f-250) mounted next to the brake booster has been unhooked (by-passed) There is a little electric fuel pump wired inline. I'm guessing he did this so he could prime it in the mornings due to the return lines leaking.
So, I am guessing my water separator is shot as well, though can't be sure??
Where can I get a new one, parts, etc.?
What do you guys recommend? I have heard of guys putting one in from a newer 7.3 that are part of the fuel filter set-up?
That is a weird place for a fuel pump. To change to the 7.3 filter setup you have te ghange the filter header and I'm pretty sure the bracket too.
I went the other way on my one truck that I put a 7.3 in I changed it too the 6.9 filter because I change the fuel filters every 2 oil changes and there used to be a substancial difference in the filter cost. I don't use a water seperator on mine and have never had any water trouble, but I change my filters more often than some.
Those ones mounted on the firewall are not so good either. They leak air in and cause all sorts of issues. Best is to get a fuel filter with the fuel water serarator attached on the bottom. Should look like a plastic cup. If you change your filters regularly, it will eliminate a lot of problems and also use a good diesel fuel conditioner that helps remove water and clean injectors. Racor makes a nice setup. not too bad of a price either.
