My 78 currently has a 351 with a 4 speed stick (with the stump-puller gear). I just picked up a 460 that will take the 351's place, but I really want to keep the manual trans. So my question is a two part: 1)Will the 460 bolt up to the trans? 2)If it will bolt up...where can I go to find a flywheel that will work with that trans? Thanks.
Yes, the bell housing will bolt up. No the flywheel won't work. Try to find a 390 flywheel if you don't have much $ to spend.
Yep. This is what I did when I swapped the 351m to 460 in my 1977 F-150 4x4 4-speed. But this will only work if your 460 is a 1968 to 1978. The balance is different on 1979 and newer 460s.

Thanks to everyone for the info! How do I find out what year my engine is? Sorry...I am kind of a novice, plus any time I have got an engine in the past I have always known what year it was thanks to the PO.
One more question...If it turns out to be a '79 or newer, am I completely without options as far as using a manual tranny with the 460?
Ford did put manual transmissions behind a 460 after 1979 (balance change), I would think that flywheel would work if it's a newer engine but I do not have first hand experience with this but it's worth looking into. L&L would also sell the flywheel but it's pricey.
You should be able to look at the balancer and flex plate and are currently on the engine. If they are weighted to one side (externally balanced) then it's a 79 and later.
I just checked the casting numbers on the block(C9VE-B) with a D3VE-A2A code for the heads. By the way it looks I have a late sixties block, so a 390 flywheel sounds like the answer. Thank you all, for once again proving my theory that FTE is the place to get reliable answers to all things related to Ford F-trucks!
