Egr Manifold

I am Istalling a motor from a 76 ford into my 78 f100 and the Motor has a manifold equiped for a egr valve which I would like to get rid of. Can I install a spacer from a earlier model 302 on it without the opening for the exhaust gas or do i need to change the manifold to a non egr manifold.

Thanks

The motor you're using is set up for EGR and it shouldn't be removed. Refer to the following thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...emissions.html

In the interest of answering your original question, though; an earlier model 302 wouldn't have any spacer; the carburetor would bolt directly to the manifold. To use an EGR manifold without an EGR spacer plate would require plugging the exhaust passage and installing a separate spacer plate, or replacing the manifold. You should never bolt a carburetor directly to an EGR manifold.

How does the exhaust get into the intake for the EGR to work in the first place?

Answer to you Q, Alex

I haven't studied my new '73 with a 360, but I know for a fact on the straight six there is a pipe threaded into the exhaust manifold and carb spacer. When the ported vacuum switch gets up to temp, the valve opens, connected to the EGR & intake vacuum, and the EGR opens allowing exhaust gas back into the intake stream through the spacer. For better performance I used to unplug the EGR and plug the line with a golf tee until SMOG test time.

Make sure to first tackle the pipe compression fitting off the exhaust manifold. It will be the most stubborn. Lots of penetrating fluid, patience, and leverage is key.

Egr Removal

Thanks for the reply. I was going to use a spacer or a non emission manifold from a non egr engine as they can be found on ebay. The reason for the question was that i would have to find a egr spacer and valve as This engine came without the parts but i have located then on ebay for short money.
