GREETINGS, I OWN AN 82 F-100 WITH THE 4.9 SIX. I WILL NEED TO REPLACE THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD SOON. WILL AN OLDER MANIFOLD FROM A PRE-EMISSION ERA FIT MY YEAR, AND WILL IT BOLT UP TO THE EXISTING INTAKE MANIFOLD? THE EGR HAS BEEN REMOVED, SO THE CONNECTOR TUBE FROM THE EXHAUST IS NOT A FACTOR.
THANKS.
The manifolds from different years should all work. However, the fitting of the exhaust headpipe to the exhaust manifold changed in 1984, I believe, to where there is no need for a gasket between the manifold and headpipe.
Have you considered using the manifolds from an EFI engine [1987-1996]? These are a popular upgrade for a little more performance.
If used, though, you will need to read about the need for a heated plate directly underneath the carburetor for better fuel atomization. This is the same area that the stock "log" exhaust manifold connects to the intake manifold.
