how hard it is to do the conversion, my 1990 lariat 2wd is in need of work on the e40d and it looks like they are not the best for reliability, I do not know what is my rear end ratio but when i am on the over drive at 60 the rpm is about 2000 maybe a bit less! Is it possible to get the same hwy ration with a manual transmission? I have see some truck have 4 speed other have 5 speed, which one will fit my truck, are is the best?
1990 Lariat 2wd extended cab
Thanks all of you, this is such a great community of Ford truck lover, it really grow on me ! for a almost only euro mechanic I love my truck!!!
Both will work with your motor but no overdrive with the 4spd so your rpm's will take a big hit.
If you have a donor truck it is not all that hard, if you have to round up all the parts separately it will be a pain and likely to nickel and dime you to death.
Before a swap I'd talk to the local reputable transmission shop and see how much to "update internals" on the E4OD and freshen it up if you just bring them the transmission. You'll save on the labor. If your considering the trouble and challenge of a swap, you should have no problem pulling a 2WD E4OD.
thank for the info, i will consider only the swap with a 5 speed to keep rpm low for long distance fuel economy. the 5 speed 2wd was offer on what model\years to fit 1990 7.3l.
is the 5 gear in close to the ratio of the overdrive of the e40d?
Year of the trans isn't the problem but the trans must come from another diesel. The bolt pattern is just different enough that the big block bell housing will not fit. 4 speed has a separate bell housing, 5 and 6 speeds have integrated bell housings like the autos.
Overdrive in both auto and manual trans are very close. The diesel trans does have a slightly different split between gears and the different 5 speeds have slightly different ratios.
If you are running 235/85-16 tires 1900 with the E4OD in overdrive 1900 RPM's works out to 60 MPH with 4.10 gears.
Overdrive in the E4OD is.71.
The two ZF 5 overdrive ratios are .77 and .76 depending on the gear set they have.
The ZF 6 overdrive is .72.
Since you truck is older than a 92, the ZF 6 will cause a bit more headache since it has no provision for a speedo drive.
By 99 all the speedos were electric and driven from the rear axle.
Pre 92 trucks were mechanical and driven from the transmission or transfer case.
