E4OD Tranny went Nuts...

Okay, here goes. I picked up a 3K load on a 2K trailer and took off on a 150 mile trip. Five miles out the truck jumped out of gear. I pulled over and tried every gear. Nothing. I figured I did not get the transfer case back in 2HI. I pulled it back and reset the shifter into 2 Hi. The truck took off like nothing had happened. When I pulled it into the drive where I was delivering the load, the tranny acted like I had the clutch in. I pushed the throttle down and it engaged and ran and shifted normally.

On the return trip, the O/D cancel light began flashing. I pulled in to a parking lot and the tranny disengaged like before. Pushing down on the throttle re-engaged the transmission. I shut it down to see if I could get the light to reset. It did not. I checked the fluid and it was normal.
Up to this point, the temp never rose above 180 degrees. During this stop the temp went to 215 but dropped immediately when i got back on the road. It did however rise incrementally on the road. It got up to 220 degrees when I shut the truck down. After the truck cooled, I started it up and there was no flashing light. The trans was engaging normally as well.

This morning, I pulled the return line from the aux cooler and it flowed 2 quarts in 30-40 seconds. The fluid is reasonably clean. Not pristine, but reasonable.

What gives?

Howdy,

Sure sounds like something that needs the codes read to be able to diagnose. You need someone with a Ford specific scan tool, the generic readers the auto parts stores use won't read transmission codes.

Ran the codes, TC slip p1782, cleared codes. Now it pulls normal, just makes a groan everytime the TC is locked up and put under a load.

Looks like time for a tranny look through...
