I have a 99 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0L OHV V6 4wheel drive with a grinding sound somewhere in the front end. I have already replaced both wheel bearing assemblies in the front, brake pads, calipers, rotors, d-side cv axle, u-joint near front differential, and still have a grinding sound when I am driving only. I took out the front drive shaft completely to see if that was where the noise was coming from and that was not it. It has been reinstalled. However I recently noticed when I put it in 4high, the transmission slips. Unknown if this is a related problem. Looking for answers.
Sounds are VERY difficult to diagnose over the Internet. The more details you can provide the better resolution you'll see in the responses.
Is the grinding sound vehicle speed or engine speed related? Does it go away or get quieter when brakes are applied? Does it change when turning? Is it constant or does it seem to only be during a fraction of a rotation (brake rotor, accessory pulley) such as one sound every rotation?
