They sell a spray cleaner for the MAF sensor. Look for it where they sell carb cleaning spray at the local auto parts stores. Just remove the sensor and follow the directions on the can. The most important things to remember are: 1. Be sure you have the right spray. Carb Cleaner or throttle body cleaner will damage the sensor. Don't be cheap here and get the right cleaner - its cheaper than a new MAF. 2. Follow the directions to the letter. It is especially important that you allow the MAF to completely dry before reinstalling it. It it is wet when you power it up - you're heading back to the parts store.
I may have missed the diagnosis but I have cleaned MAFs before .
Check your terminals. I really mean get in there with a wire brush and scrub the hell out of them or get some good ones from a stereo shop. While doing that check your wiring, especially the ground. I have chased gremlins in modern vehicles that regularly lead back to the electrical system. Just to many computers in these things now.
While helping a buddy replace the head gaskets on a Mercury years ago, we chased a no-start condition for two weeks until his darling daughter held up a ground wire and asked if it was important. We both felt like complete idiots. Nothing makes you feel as dumb as a dumb ground wire.
