Hey guys I got a 74 F250 Crew shortbed. An it does not have a bed on it an I am wanting to see what kind of bed can you put on these trucks. Is there a way to make it into a long bed? An would a stepside look good on it? I am just wanting to get it running an pass inspection but long terms plans are wraparound brushguard visor with lights roll up cover bed extender an two tone paint with headers 4" dual exhaust a cam an hurst shift kit just to name a few things I am planning to do to it. So any ideas as to what I can do as far as the bed?
Would be nice if they made a bed with bolt on plastic sides. That would save us all a lot in repair costs. I had a 2000 ford F150 flare side that had fiberglass bedsides that bolted on. Thought it was an awesome idea. If I ever had to get rid of my bed or replace it I think I would go with a wood plank flatbed, that way I can always easily replace the wood slats if they get damaged.
Arrrg! A shorty f250 crew dent. Hard to find and looks killer with the swb on it. There are alot of guys looking for that combo. Put your dreaming cap on. It's like buying a packet of corn seed, inside the packet there is dried up kernals but on the package it shows a harvest of corn.
your going to find out real fast how hard a short bed is to find. And if your lucky enough to find one be prepared to pay a premium.
As far as converting it to a long bed. You will have to stretch the frame or change the frame.
as far as plastic bed sides. Ive repaired many from 1500+ from insurance companys due to a tire blow out! I'll take a rust repair over a full plastic bed side swap anyday!
if you are good at fabrication you can buy long box sides and shorten the front of the panels. the short box is just shorter in front of the wheel wells. the box floor is the same up to 1996 so they are interchangeable. so in a situation where the box needs replaced, you can buy a newer box with rusted side panels or dented. then shorten it to the short box length, and replace the outer side panels with short box side panels from a dent side, or cut back dent side panels from a long box. it is a lot of work. these short boxes are like gold, and can cost a lot to buy. to do this sort of fabrication, you will need to be an experienced fabricator and bodyman. it would not be a novice skill level project.this would be a way to build your own if your up to the work.
