Started tearing down the 2.3 yesterday................Pretty good ridge on the top of cylinders, went to AZ to rent a ridge reamer..............It was screwed up by the last person to use it and now have take it back, 40 mile round trip............Grrrrrrr!......Cant take the pistons out thru the bottom, only the top on a 2.3 OHC.........I hate setbacks!
you can borrow mine dave.. here a few years back i replaced the bit in mine and haven't used it since. and its a blue point. the last time i used it it was on my race car engine i built. it was a 82 318 w/360 aawj 4v heads. comp cams extreme energy cam, variable duration lifters, and push rods. that engine is in my 68 coronet today.. that car and engine has 7000laps on it and she is tired.
I am waiting on heads from the shop to put on the 64. The truck isnt vey good but engine is. Great block with new pistons and 60 psi oil pressure. The tear down was tough with only the left arm, as the other is out of service due to shoulder surgery. My wife always tells me one way to build brain function is to do things in an unaccustomed manner. I should be getting real smart. Most all the time taking the engine stuff off was spent inside the motor compartment. Had to use the engine hoist to take off intake and heads. Shoulder has been hurting this week due to too much usage.
While waiting for the heads tore down a newly acquired 312 the last two days. The block is shot, but...G heads with seats installed in intake and exhaust, positve seal valve seals, new vavle guides, hardened valve keepers, great crank. Just couldnt believe it. and other goodies.
It has been interesting doing all this in a disabled state. You use knees, stomach, just about anything available to get the job done. Took out a couple valves using my chest to compress the valve spring compressor.
Maybe winter is good, because there would be a whole lot of more boring things to be done.
Well my window project took a set back yesterday, I broke the mounting for the wing window as I was reinstalling the wing window back into it's frame. With all the spare parts that I have, I have no more driver side wing windows left.
Good score on the 312! Keep your eye out for another 312 crank, my son want's to build another one.
You do know that you DON'T want to use a 312 block to make a 312 don't ya?
Yes, I wasnt interested in the block anyway, but everything else. I am going to sell this crank to help pay for the head rebuild. There is a new grind 292/ 312 crank on the shelf. This looks like a great 10/10 crank. Do not think the rod journals need reground. An outfit in Eugene does a fantastic job of taking the mains to 292 size. They can even grind down the rear seal area while maintaining oil slinger.

Thanks, Jack!........But I am gonna make AZ cough up a good one first, after all I only got 4 cylinders to ream the ridge off.........Still, what a PITA.
