I was a litttle surprised to see that Wally's 'Black Friday' special computers were mainly 64 bit W7. When I did a little searching, MS mentioned that the 64 bit version (which seems to be their preferred) would require 64 bit drivers -- and they mentioned printers as an example.
I'm wondering what other types of drivers would be affected. This would be the case where you replace a 32 bit XP machine with a shiny new 64 bit W7 -- not a software change.
If you buy the computer pre installed with Windows 7 64bit, then all internal drivers will be just dandy, but any peripherals you buy, such as Printers, Scanners, TV Tuners, etc.. will need to have 64bit drivers in order to work. Things like cameras use a fairly generic protocol and should be alright.
If you upgrade a machine from XP 32bit to Windows 7 64bit, you will need to find 64bit drivers for all of the internal hardware.
Win7 x64 will accept Vista x64 drivers but it will not accept WinXP x64 drivers.
Unless you're running older hardware, finding Vista x64 drivers to run on Win7 shouldn't be a problem.
I've run both the x86 and x64 versions of Win7 and haven't noticed any significant performance change between the two - gaming, multimedia, etc., seems to run equally as well on both platforms...
Generally, though, for compatibility reasons, I've found the x86 version better to deal with...
