Thanks for the good explanation of how to drop the spare. However, as is with every project I try, I've had a snag in the process. I bought an Irwin extractor kit. Tried the 9/16" and it refused to go on the adaptor when I hammered it. I tried the 5/8" too just in case with no luck. I used a dead-blow hammer, but after a couple hits on the extension it would just slip off. Any technique tips I could try? Thanks.

After trying many different methods, the one for me was using a single long extension with a 17mm socket. After a couple hits with a hammer, it gripped the lock bolt and I was able to lower the spare. When I removed the socket, the lock bolt came out with it and now I can use the normal spare crank on the tire winch. I'm not concerned someone would go to the trouble to steal the spare.
