..on this truck I just bought? Turns out the casting number for the 400M is Casting number is D1AE-A1C (or maybe D1AE-A10). That puts it as a '71, which if I've read right means it does not have the retarded cam, correct?
If its original, you could even have the higher compression pistons, although the cam may be the non retarded one any new aftermarket cam would be way better...
The block casting number only means that the casting is the '71 type casting. You need the date code next to the oil pressure sensor to determine when it was actually built. I believe that the '71 castings were used until at least '73, but the high compression non-retarded motors were only used in LTD sedans in '71.
What transmission is in it? If you are really lucky, it will be an FMX, and the motor will be one of those rare-as-hens-teeth 400s with a SB bell pattern.
