What is this sound?
High mileage (260,000 miles), no evidence vehicle ever been overhauled, but (unconfirmed) one new turbo installed under warranty years (over 160,000 miles) ago.
Had occasional P0404, 0405 codes, and turbo underboost (P0299) codes.
All of them "cleared" and then did not return (at least for a little while).
Have had 2 or 3 instances where turbo totally bogged down (white smoke) and coded... in past 2 months.
Fixed by, a) stopping. b) restarting engine, c) clearing codes.
Then back to normal....
For most of 2009, vehicle sat and did few miles. Prior to that, mid-distance hauling of load every day for 200 miles a day from new to end 2008.
Vehicle maintenance log show excellent history of mechanical maintenance like oil changes, etc. (terrible odds and ends, interior maintenance).
Noise:
With driver side window open, traveling on a normal suburban road with houses on the side (say 75ft setback), here is the noise I hear:
If I step on the gas, (RPM over 2,000) and suddenly back off the gas, there is a noise that sound like a scraping, grinding sound of a valve ./ door opening.
Almost like a grinding sound, ending with a muted thunk (not bang), the sound is like something being moved / scraping along, and it ends.
Sound may happen twice (as of it is being repeated).

Question:
A) what is it ?
Is it the turbo lift gate / vane
B) is it normal?
C) what might be failing soon / in future?
Thanks to all that respond!
