OK I got the 460 in the truck get everything hooked up fired up and back it out of the garage to do some cleaning.......cleaning done I fire truck back up put it in DRIVE and I go BACKWARDS.......................now the vacuum line on the modulator to the intake is NOT hooked up at this time............is THIS my problem.......my old line was rusted and had holes I am waiting for a new one....hence the cleaning if you got to wait might as well clean............................
Sounds like the shift selector slipped. Just loosen the adjuster nut on the lever and shift the collar into Park or nuetral (with wheels blocked) and then manually move the trans lever into position. Tighten the nut and motor away.
As for the modulator, it would control the shift points while in drive, Reverse, 1 and 2 will still work as normal.
you refering to the nut on the rod to the colum or on the tranny itself??????
I believe he means the nut/bolt that holds the two sections of linkage that connect the shifter on the column to the linkage on the transmission. I had the one on my old Econoline fall out once and the 2 sections of linkage just hung there until I figured out what the problem was lol...
that's what I was thinking I checked all of that.....I can hear the tranny shifting "inside" the case.......I tried something else today the truck tries to back up when the shifter in PARK.......I turn off the truck THEN it will rolls back on to the parking pin........
You need to readjust the linkage AT the tranny. It must have slipped, and it's a simple adjustment, just put the shifter on the column on something like Neutral, and then go under the truck and loosen the adjuster nut, shift the tranny all the way DOWN and then ratchet it up 4 spots to neutral and then tighten.
You may need to fine tune to get the selector to synch with the trans.
If it isn't that then the shift collar on the steering column is broken and is creating a butt-load of slop.

all my linkages are good and tight I'll try the adjusting that nut and HOPEFULLY this will work....................
The shift collar on the steering column (where the handle is) is notorious for cracking and breaking, which would create a ton of slop and also make it difficult to select any gears.
well I have tried all of the above, and got the same result each and every time..........at this point I'm thinking its going to be something internial! The plus side is I have a 2500 mile C6 on the garage floor I'm gonna swap in tonight................
